Staffin calves off to the mart

YOUNG cattle from Staffin were among more than 1,200 calves sold at the first Skye sale of the season in Portree yesterday (Monday).

Dingwall and Highland Marts Ltd. sold 1,246 weaned calves and store cattle at their annual district ballot show and sale. Seventy three calves were sold from the Taobh Sear and a Limousin X bullock sold by John Gillies, Sartle, was among the leading prices for its weight category while stock other parts of the north end, including Linicro, Totescore and Glenconon, also did well.

A spokesman for the company said. “Although calves were generally lacking the bloom of last year, top quality calves sold extremely well,” he said.

The judge, Thurso-based John Anderson, awarded the champion and the D. J. Macdonald (Orbost) Memorial Trophy to an 11-month old 470kg Limousin cross bullock from Neil Morrison, 12 Portnalong, Carbost, which later sold for £1,150. The reserve, from the same fold, was a 13-month old 490kg Limousin X bullock which fetched £1,080 in the ring.
