– The Staffin Community Hall Association awarded funding from People’s Health Trust using money raised by HealthKind through The Health Lottery –

CONSTRUCTION work has started of an exciting new leisure development in Staffin – a new gym for the community. Local builders A&A MacDonald are working in the attic of the Staffin Community Hall, which is just above the foyer, where the new gym will be located

Staffin Community Hall Association began discussing the potential uses of an empty space in the attic last year and there was strong community support for a new gym after a consultation exercise. The People’s Health Trust is the main funder, along with Highland Council. The hall committee set up a steering group to drive the gym project.

Martin Perry, project manager, said he was hopeful the work would be finished in around six weeks’ time, with the equipment arriving soon after. The equipment will include two bikes, two treadmills, a cross-trainer, a rower and a multi-gym.

Opening hours are to be arranged but access will be by a swipe card system. Membership and class costs have yet to be finalised but will be run on a community basis to cover costs. A fitness instructor is to be appointed before the gym is open to assist with equipping the facility. The successful candidate will set out to ensure active community use of the gym, and look to establish classes.
